What exactly is the swine flu?
Novel H1N1 (referred to as “swine flu” early on) is a new influenza virus
causing illness and respiratory infection in people worldwide. This new virus was first detected in people in the United States in April 2009. The virus is spreading from person-to-person, probably in much the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread. This virus was originally referred to as “swine flu” because laboratory testing showed that many of the genes in this new virus were very similar to influenza viruses that normally occur in pigs in North America. However, further study has shown that this new virus is very different from what normally circulates in North American pigs. It has two genes from flu viruses that normally circulate in pigs in Europe and Asia and avian genes and human genes. So technically, it’s a human flu virus. (more…)

It is impossible to turn on the television without hearing about the recent passing of Michael Jackson. The official autopsy results are being released later this week and news outlets are reporting various causes of death. The most reported cause is Michael Jackson’s ALLEGED addiction to pain killers which led to his death at such a young age. However, people have abused pain pills long before Michael! (more…)
What is Mean Corpuscular Volume? I recently had some blood work done, and the doctor said my MCV was elevated, but I don’t know what that is. The Standard range is 80.0-100.0 fl. Mine was 100.7 fl. She said this might be due to a b12 deficiency. Will this Kill me? Will I need medicine for this? Does it go away? (more…)
